Oct 25, 2016 - Twelve UFO’s from five states gathered at Mark Trimble’s Ozark Auto Show at Hollister, MO to see and hear a program about the “Attempted Salvage of a B-24 Bomber lost in Labrador during WW2”, followed by a tour and remarks on various airplanes in Mark’s collection of airplanes – The first Culver Cadet is one that we may hear more of in the future.
UFOs and guests totaled 21. We had 4 UFOs fly in. Those present from Missouri were Ron Anderson, Allan & Dot Brennecke, Gene Engledow (Age 103), Charles Garst, Jim Getty, Bill Newton, Sam Swihart, and Mark’s wife Lea Trimble; from Alabama, John & Rita Dumbacher; from Arkansas, Rudy Polacek and Bob Grissman; from Oklahoma, Jack and Connie Kearbey; and from Illinois, Donald E. Miller and Peggy Ducheny.
Also, Jack Reynolds and Jan Hoynacki from United States Pilots Association were our guests.
Those that stayed overnight saw a few shows that Branson is famous for.

Oct 19, 2016 - Nine loyal UFO members and one guest, Reb Stimson (who will be joining our ranks on November 1), met for lunch and hangar talk on October 19. This was lucky number thirteen in our series of "roundups". Unfortunately, weather kept our speaker for the day, Dick Williams, from attending, but we'll try again at our January meeting. It's not set in stone yet, but we're looking at January 25. Stay tuned.

Oct 19, 2016 - What a wonderful day! The magnificent colors of an Autumn in New England are nowhere more vibrantly displayed than in Vermont. The temperatures were in the low seventies, light winds were from the north right down runway 01 and the skies were clear with just enough clouds to make the setting picture perfect. Seven airplanes brought 15 members and guests to this, the last event of the year for the UFO Northeast Region. Dave and Rebecca Mroczek from Northfield Massachusetts were the first to arrive with their guest Fred Fraini. It was their first UFO event and they were welcomed by organizers Dick Catlin and Bob Barker. Others landed shortly after and joined the group for some homemade brownies and fellowship at the airport.
Middlebury is a lovely New England college town. Dick and Bob provided ground transportation to the Storm Café in the center of town and the setting and the food could not have been better. On the way back to the airport Dick drove slowly through the extensive college campus, stopping briefly atop a hill with a breathtaking view of the mountains surrounding the college. Back at the field, the friendly airport manage, who goes by the name of Cisco, thanked us for coming and wished all a safe flight home. There can be no doubt we will repeat this event next year.

Oct 12, 2016 - Forty UFO members and guests gathered for a UFO Meeting hosted by AOPA at the Frederick, MD Airport on October 12th. This included 7 members who flew in. Members and guests came from 7 different states.
Mark Baker, AOPA President, addressed the gathering, answered questions and joined us for lunch. AOPA’s Gary Crump, who was instrumental in pushing the medical reform legislation, provided his insight on the medical reform and answered many member questions.
Also in attendance were UFO President Warren Wood, UFO VP Field Network Jim Cavender, UFO VP Membership John Sullivan, Northeast Regional Manager Bob Barker and UFO Board Member Wayne Peters. However, the star was UFO Member George Levis who started flying in 1928 and will be 107 in December.
Several members got to fly the full motion Redbird simulator under the supervision of Mike Woods, manager of AOPA’s National Aviation Community Center (NACC)

Sep 14, 2016 - What the Houston Area contingent lacked in numbers at the Fly In/Drive In on September 14, they made up for in lively banter. There were two airplanes and four members who gathered at the Aviator Grill on David Wayne Hooks Airport (KDWH) for a meet and greet. In the photo in front of Ron Hudson's 172, we have (from left to right) Dan Nicholson (our host), Ron Hudson, Dick Williams and Jim Cavender. DWH is one of the very few privately owned GA airports with a FAA control tower. Dan explained to us the history of the airport and regaled us with some colorful stories. (He lives on the airport!) There will be more events like this one in the future. Count on it.

Aug 12, 2016 - Friday, August 12, 2016 found a group of UNITED FLYING OCTOGENARIANS seated around two long tables at Dale Etherington’s airport, Glenndale 8I3, feasting on fried chicken and an awesome array of other foods prepared by local (and excellent) cooks! The room was filled with fellowship, conversation, and shared enjoyment in the delicious food. Attending besides Dale and his wife and daughter were Charlie Holleman and George Palmer from West Lafayette, Jim Campbell from Carmel, Ralph Jeffers from Peru, Bob Plattner (who has never missed a meeting) from Fort Wayne, Gene and Barbara McCauley from Kokomo, Jim and Ginger Wright from Kokomo, George Robbins and pilot daughter Karen James from Seymour, and Nancy Warren from Columbus.
Following lunch everyone was transported to Grissom Air Force Base to spend some time in their museum and to walk outside among the aircraft on static display; aircraft which evoked many memories for some of our UFO members.
What a wonderful day and a terrific way to be with aviation friends!

Jul 27, 2016 - There were eight hardy UFO'ers who braved the stormy weather to gather at KGPM (Grand Prairie Municipal) for ROUNDUP XII on July 27. Not only that but, we had two intrepid members who flew-in in spite of less than ideal flying weather. Our speaker for the day had to beg off; he was scheduled to fly-in from Copperas Cove. Dick will try again in October. This snapshot of our gang was taken in front of Jack Russell's beautiful twin Navajo. Next up: ROUNDUP XIII on October 19.

Jul 7, 2016 - UFO members from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania socialized at the Pottstown, PA airport On July 7th. The meeting was hosted by Ramsey DiLibro, the UFO PA Area Rep Llyod Babcock, and FlyElite Aviation. FlyElite provided food and drinks. We were pleased to have John Billings, a decorated B-17 pilot, attend for the second year in a row. John received the National Endeavor Award in 2015 for his extensive charitable flying, primarily with Angel Flight. John is 92. John Sullivan, a UFO VP, flew in from Maryland with his wife Patricia. The group photo was taken by Ralph Baron. A good time was had by all.

Jun 23, 2016 - It was lobster on the pier in a little known gem of a location a few miles from the airport in Rockland (RKD). It was the first UFO meeting for Bob Cox. Welcome, Bob. Rockland is local territory for Dick Devito and for Mark and Helen Warner but it was a 2 hour flight for Carl Carlson. A good time was had by all, organized by Bob and Heilwig Barker.

Jun 22, 2016 - A wonderful UFO Meeting enjoyed by 21 UFO members plus their guests and wives. Wray Fleming was a delightful host serving a meal to remember. On a hot day elsewhere, we met in a shady area in his back yard with a nice breeze. The meeting was held at Cameron Park, a private airport with hangars adjoining homes. We parked our airplanes on the street backed up to the lawns. Easy access, with our planes right outside the house. Wide streets for planes taxiing to and from homes. So good of Wray opening his home up to all UFO members in California.
PS: Many thanks to Bill Webber for the excellent name tags.

Jun 10, 2016 - A little more wind than comfortable didn’t keep 11 UFO enthusiasts from congregating at the Beacon Bar and Grille on the airport at Groton, CT for lunch. The event was organized jointly by Ken Haefner and Bob Barker. Happy faces all around tell the story.

May 27, 2016 - This long-anticipated meeting actually began on May 26 when warnings of unstable weather conditions triggered a rash of cancellations from UFO members in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, and Michigan. However, the “show went on” as planned and by the close of the meeting those attending were talking only about their enjoyment of the day!
UFO Charles Holleman of West Lafayette and former Professor at Purdue, hosted the meeting. Fourteen UFO members attended, including three from Illinois, plus three guests. Our newest member, George Palmer of West Lafayette, was introduced during the luncheon. George is well-known at Purdue and in the aviation world, having designed and assisted in building the wind tunnel at Purdue.
Following a delicious lunch at Wiley Dining Court, our host led the group on a tour of the facilities housing the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology where they met Supervisor Bill Crabill. Included was the Aerospace Engineering Lab where the Wind Tunnel is housed, and the Simulator Building bearing Charles Holleman’s name. A meeting with Brian Stirm, whose position includes working with aircraft maintenance and Swift Aviation, provided an opportunity for questions from the group.
It was truly an AVIATION DAY in every respect and more than one member was overheard to say, “Wow! This was the best meeting ever!”

May 18, 2016 - New faces were prominent among the members attending the ANNUAL UFO FLY-IN organized by Bob Barker at the Danbury airport in Connecticut on May 18th. UFO Director John Sullivan counted 50 members and guests at the luncheon and thought it might be a record number for UFO Fly-Ins. UFO Director Jim Cavender came all the way from Texas to enjoy the day.
Members flew in from 7 surrounding states with 25 airplanes and one helicopter. That’s a lot of aircraft to accommodate, particularly when one of them is as large as Jack Bart’s Grumman Mallard. Jack flew this magnificent flying boat to Danbury with crew members Steve Ferguson and Dominic Cammarotta.
Tino Valente and brother Al brought as spiffy a T34 as you will see anywhere. Richard Perillo piloted his rare and beautiful Great Lakes biplane to the event. Bernie Asher, a friend of the late Captain and past UFO President John Miller, brought his wife in their Piper Malibu.
Enstrom pilot Roland Toutant and Bob Montlick celebrated their birthdays; Bob was one day short of 80 and asked for a Membership Application form as did a couple other pilots. Mike Silvester handed in his at the meeting.
There were some laughs as Bob Barker awarded a UFO cap to the member deemed most to need it by virtue of having the least hair. Tom Johnston won the prize for coming the farthest distance and therefore the most likely to need it. It was a Porta-Johnny and came with a plain paper bag so no one needs know its contents when you carry it into the FBO after landing.
Things went from ridiculous to sublime when Hugo Schreck was introduced and showed samples of his work. Hugo knows how to capture the stark beauty of cloud formations like no other professional photographer. He one of his sky posters as a gift to every pilot at the luncheon.
Smiles were everywhere all day. The group photo is not complete but it captures some of them. It was a very good day.

Apr 27, 2016 - Grand Prairie Municipal Airport in Grand Prairie Texas was the venue, and the occasion was the eleventh installment of what we have come to refer to as our ROUNDUP's. This time around we had a total of eleven members, one guest and three airplanes. To provide a new twist to our gatherings, we had one of our own members, Gil Holt, speak to us about the PERSONAL aspects of pilot training. Gil gave all of us a lot to think about in relation to our own flying experiences.
By the way, we were especially honored to have our three newest Texas members - Terry Grimes, David Guinn and Don Eades - Join us. To a man, they're delighted to be associated with the North Central Texas UFO contingent. Details about our July and October meetings are still in the planning stages. Stay tuned.

Apr 21, 2016 - UFO'S gathered at MGY on 21 April 2016. Host facility was Dayton Wright Brother's Model "B" (Look-A-Like) hangar. Although the WX put a damper on fly-in attendance (5) and the opportunity to fly in the Wright "B" Flyer, 14 UFO members, including 2 from MI, participated in the event. Charlie DeBerry & his Wife, Ellen with her friend, Liane Green, arranged a first class get-together & luncheon.
Wright "B" Flyer Volunteer Members presented an historical presentation on how the Wright Brother's developed their flying machine. Following that, a walk-around brief & inspection of the Look-A-Like Model "B" took place. Highlighted by the briefer were the many events, both National & International, where the airplane has been a principle flying attraction. A replacement for the existing airplane is planned and is now under construction.
Luncheon in the hangar and social activity followed to complete an enjoyable meeting.

Apr 12, 2016 - This event was a Wonderful two-day event visiting three Museums in the Kansas City Area. The Airline Museum, the TWA Museum and the World War I Museum.
Ron Anderson did a great job of planning and hosting this event and was assisted by Jim Getty and wife Carol. Eight UFOs from four states were in attendance. UFO’s in attendance were Ron Anderson (MO), James Getty (MO), Sam Swihart (MO), Eugene Engledow (MO), Don Miller (IL), and Robert Garnett (IA). Jack Kearbey and wife Connie (OK), and Al Brennecke (MO), Jim Laney, Bill Miller, and Richard Anderson were guests. The weather was great but no fly-ins.
Some of the highlights of the event was the restored Constellation O49 at the AIRLINE Museum, lunch at CHAPELLAS, then the memorabilia and history of TWA airline at the TWA Museum. Incidentally Ron Anderson is a retired TWA Captain. Next day, the World War I Museum which is a realistic and thorough history lesson of this terrible war.
Special mention is made that Jack Kearby’s birthday was April 12th and we watched and celebrated his turning 85 with a Barbeque Dinner at the SMOKEHOUSE, followed with Ice Cream and Cake at Jim Getty and wife Carol Lake’s Weatherby home. We were all grateful of their hospitality to fellow UFO’s.
Jack Kearbey told us about his current project of building a full scale WW1 SOPWITH SCOUT with an original Rotary Engine, 11mm Vickers Machine Gun, original Tachometer and other flight instruments. Should be flying this year.

Feb 3, 2016 - Over 40 UFO members and guests met at the Hiller Museum in San Carlos, CA. After UFO news and updates, one new member stood up and gave a short introduction of himself and his flying background.
Our guest speaker, Vicky Benzing, an accomplished aerobatics pilot provided background on aerobatic flying, techniques and scoring. She showed a short video and then offered a summary of her aerobatic training and history. Our group was very interested in her training, skills and accomplishments, and questions from the floor, and later privately, kept the meeting going for quite some time.

Jan 27, 2016 - Texas is growing! On January 27 thirteen members and 3 guests gathered at KGPM (Grand Prairie Municipal) for the most successful ROUNDUP to date. Five our our group flew in from as far away as Tulsa in four aircraft. Entertainment was provided by Paul Lassen from Sun City who provided a short movie about life at the Air Force Academy, and after lunch there was spirited discussion about a "regional" fly-in at the Fredericksburg (T82) airport. We're aiming toward late June. Stay tuned!

Jan 20, 2016 - UFO Members had a wonderful meeting of very nice people. There were 20 in all and 10 members. One of our guests took pictures. One picture is of the members and the other is everyone present except the guest who kept taking pictures.
One of the members, Dr. Baker, 90, just retired and every time he had a pilot in for a physical who was near 80, he urged that person to join UFO. A very dear man beloved by the pilots who knew hm.
This was so much fun that we'll repeat next year in January.
